CANADA'S CRITIQUE OF MALAYSIA RETURNED TO SENDER

Canada's Prime Minister Jean Chretien took advantage of the gathering of Asia-Pacific leaders in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia to lecture the host government on human rights. According to the Globe and Mail's John Stackhouse, the response from Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad was the following: (Globe & Mail, Nov. 16, 1998)
Speaking to reporters later, the Malaysian leader ridiculed Prime Minister Jean Chretien's concerns about human rights in the region, and advised him not to raise it at this week's Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation Forum (APEC). "I'm concerned about human rights worldwide, including Canada," Dr. Mahathir said sarcastically. "I'm concerned with the red Indians. I don't see them at APEC."
