Thursday, November 19, 1998

TO ALL THOSE CONCERNED WITH RACISM AS A HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, Mr. Maurice Glele-Ahanhanzo, visited the U.S. in 1994 and wrote a report in 1995 detailing human rights violations in this area. (The U.N. document number is E/CN.4/1995/78/add.1 and can be retrieved from the UN Web Site, at http://www.unhchr.ch)

He is now preparing his next report to be submitted to the U.N. Commission on Human Rights where he updates any information on countries he has already visited.

IT IS CRUCIAL THAT YOU SUBMIT ANY INFORMATION ON RACISM AND RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN THE U.S. WHICH HAVE OCCURRED OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS.

For his update to maintain its credibility, the information sent must be accurate and verifiable. If it is a report or any other long document (i.e. of an organization, state or city agency, etc.), please include a short summary, highlighting the main points.

Material should be sent to:

Mr. Maurice Glele-Ahanhanzo
UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions
Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
Palais des Nations
CH-1211 Geneve 10, Switzerland
Fax: 011 41 22 917 0212
It should be sent Express or Global Priority Mail.

Please fax me at (212) 678-2548 indicating what material you sent and when, so that we can keep track of what he has received.

Yours,

Roger Wareham

P.S. The U.N. has authorized a World Conference on Racism which is to be held by 2001. This World Conference presents a tremendous opportunity for people of African descent to accomplish Malcolm X's dictate that in order for our struggle to advance, we must place it on the international agenda. The work done by Mr. Glele, in its objectivity, helps to advance our cause and to lay the basis for charging the US as a leading violator of human rights.
