Jun 3/97: Report on rally for Ts'peten Defenders

REPORT ON RALLY FOR TS'PETEN DEFENDERS

June 3, 1997

Hundreds of native and non-native people gathered in a public square in Vancouver on Saturday, May 31st in a show of support for the Gustafsen Lake defenders, who are facing prison sentences on June 6th and 10th. Despite the pouring rain, many came to hear Defenders and traditional people from Lil'Wat, Dene, Mohawk, and other Indian nations speak about the ongoing war against traditional people and the refusal by Canada to acknowledge existing indigenous rights. After Splitting the Sky rocked the foundations (and shook the windows) of the downtown area with a call to resistance, the authorities shut down the sound system's electricity while Kelly White was addressing the crowd... Obviously prepared for this, the rally's organisers plugged in a generator and the protest continued. Those who attended the rally demanded the release of the Wolverine and OJ - who are political prisoners at Surrey Pretrial Centre - and a third party tribunal and public inquiry.
