ONTARIO FEDERATION OF ANGLERS AND HUNTERS

More "equal rights for all" rhetoric, this time calling for an end to native fishing rights. For more information on OFAH check out:

* Anti-Racist Action Toronto's exposé of OFAH: http://www.web.net/~ara/documents/ofahnatics.htm

It is worth noting that a number of groups have sprung up recently to work against native fishing rights. CLEAR, an environmental group, identifies the following groups in the August 19, 1997 edition of their magazine A CLEAR View (Vol. 4 #10):
* Sportsmen Protecting Every American's Right (SPEAR)
SPEAR ran an advertisement in the St. Paul Pioneer Press calling for a rally on the official Minnesota fishing 'opening day' (May 10), to protest what they believe is preferential treatment of Native Americans under the law.
* The Hunting and Angling Club
* Proper Economic Resource Management (PERM)
The Hunting and Angling Club, an anti-native organization masquerading as a sportsmen's group, was founded by Howard Hanson, a board member of Citizens Equal Rights Alliance (an national anti-native organization). Hanson is also closely affiliated with PERM. PERM was able to enlist the help of revered former Minnesota Vikings head coach Bud Grant in the cause.
* Protect Americans' Rights and Resources (PARR)
Formed in the early 1990s in Wisconsin to battle the Chippewa Tribe as they reasserted the right to spear fish in area lakes, PARR's agenda has since branched out to include everything from blanket opposition to U.S. Federal Indian policy to gun control to curbs on smoking.
If you know how to reach any of these groups, please let us know via email at SISIS@envirolink.org.

ALL CITIZENS EQUAL

All Citizens Equal goes includes the typical "Indians have too many rights and that is racism" doublespeak typical of most anti-native groups, but goes beyond that to directly fight any attempt by native nations to reassert their legal sovereignty. Their primary objective, according to their website, is to "[a]ggressively pursue local, state and national legislation and judicial decisions to affirm that private and state lands and public natural resources remain under county, state and federal jurisdiction".
"It is a myth, invented by tribal attorneys and perpetuated by the media, that the tribes are a sovereign nation with the governmental authority to govern those people and lands within the reservation." - All Citizens Equal statement

PAULINE HANSON AND THE "ONE NATION" PARTY

Pauline Hanson is an Australian racist-turned-politician (shades of David Duke) who claims Aboriginal people "practice cannibalism" and that Asian migrants "are stealing our nation". At her rallies anti-racist activists have been attacked by fascists aligned with National Action, a neo-Nazi group.

Like David Duke, Hanson is very well organized, and her political party 'One Nation' is becoming strongly politically influential in Australia. An ex-Liberal, she won a seat in Oxley in the 1996 federal elections, running as an independent, and then launched the 'One Nation' party in April 1997.

One Nation includes, in its list of "immediate goals":

* To stop all immigration except that related to investment that will lead to employment, and for this to continue until Australia's unemployment is solved.

* To treat all Australians equally, and in so doing, abolish divisive and discriminatory policies such as those related to aboriginal and multicultural affairs.

* To restrict foreign ownership of Australia, repeal the Native Titles Act, abolish ATSIC, and reverse WIK and MABO.

* To take positive action on such matters as taxation reform, education, health, crime, and the discrimination created by political correctness.

Scary.

F.I.R.E.

("Federation for Individual Rights and Equality")

F.I.R.E. chapters actively oppose the native sovereigntist movement, and call for the application of colonial Canadian law to all people living in areas claimed as part of "Canada" - including areas that are unceded lands legally held by sovereign native nations. F.I.R.E. believes current government policies discriminate in favour of indigenous peoples, and that the only level of self-government indigenous peoples can argue for is a municipal level.

Note: Sylvia Hayes asked us to point out that the F.I.R.E. we refer to here is *not* Feminist International Radio Endeavor, which also goes by the acronym F.I.R.E.

ON FIRE "was born out of frustration and dissatisfaction with the way that our governments (Canada and Ontario) are dealing with native land claims", particularly the standoff at Ipperwash in 1995, which they felt was unfair to non-native people who were cut off from their cottages by the Stoney Pointers.

RON ARNOLD & the CENTER FOR THE DEFENSE OF FREE ENTERPRISE

The Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise is a right-wing organization headed by Alan Gottlieb (firearms activist) and Ron Arnold (the founder of the 'Wise Use' movement - more info at http://www.ewg.org/pub/home/clear/clear.html). Ron Arnold is touted on the site as "an effective fighter for individual liberties, property rights and limited government. Ron is especially well known as a staunch foe of those who use environmentalism for personal gain, to restrict the liberties of others, or for anti-competitive advantage." The 'Wise Use' movement is well-known for its uncompromising pro-industry stance and has, in its US incarnation and its Canadian equivalent SHARE, stood many times against indigenous sovereigntists fighting industrial destruction of their lands.

THE MACKENZIE INSTITUTE

The Mackenzie Institute "is concerned with issues relating to political instability and organized violence - including such matters as terrorism, propaganda, political extremism and organized crime....The Institute holds to the proposition that individual rights and freedoms and the liberal democratic tradition must be safeguarded and fostered, and that these are the keys to freedom, prosperity and peace."

Mackenzie Institute publications include "The Ipperwash Protests - An Unfinished Drama", a very interesting piece of anti-sovereigntist propaganda.

B.C. REAL ESTATE ASSOCIATION

The B.C. Real Estate Association's web site includes a page on the association's "Position on Aboriginal Issues". Their position is similar to that of F.I.R.E.: that indigenous nations are subsumed under Canada and B.C., and that treaty negotiations should only happen if "all British Columbians are afforded equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities under the laws of Canada and the Province". The following statement, from the BCREA web site, sums up their position quite well: "BCREA favours the creation of municipal-style models of self-government for Aboriginal groups. BCREA does not favour the creation of independent nations."

The association also believes that in treaty negotiations, "the interests of all third parties and stakeholders must be fully taken into account", and is lobbying the B.C. government to legislate protection of all private land interests in treaty or other negotiations with indigenous peoples. Their call for protection includes unceded "grazing land, easements, land leases, registered trap lines, right of ways, water lots, and other occupier interests". If this legislation had been in place at the time of the Ts'peten standoff, it could have encouraged even more intense enforcement of Lyle James' "right" to have his cows defecate on the Sundance grounds within unceded Shuswap territory.

B.C. REPORT

B.C. Report is B.C.'s most right-wing mass-produced news magazine. Virtually every issue contains an article against indigenous sovereignty or general racist paternalism towards indigenous peoples. As far as we're concerned, the only good thing about the magazine is that they have a toll-free number for people to express their opinions...

THE REFORM PARTY OF CANADA

The Reform Party of Canada believes that indigenous nations should be treated as municipalities within Canada, and that all indigenous peoples should be subject to colonial provincial and federal laws. Their policy, stated in "Reform's Fresh Start for Aboriginal Peoples: 1996 Blue Sheet" is: " The Reform Party maintains that any form of Indian self-government will be a delegated form of government and all lands within the borders of Canada will remain part of Canada. The laws of Canada (and the Provinces and Territories) including the Canadian Constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms will apply to Indian governments. Any laws enacted by Indian governments must conform to the laws of Canada."

GRAVITAS MAGAZINE

Gravitas gave ON F.I.R.E. permission to reprint an article from Gravitas, written by John C. Thompson, called "The Long Fall of the Mohawk Warriors", a rather scurrilous piece with the usual anti-sovereigntist diatribe blaming the Mohawk stand at Oka for inspiring "aboriginal militants" at Stoney Point (aka Ipperwash), Ts'peten (aka Gustafsen Lake), etc. The magazine is generally right-wing and has a generally racist tone to it - it includes articles by folks affiliated with many of the groups listed on this page. Sample copies are free.
