Hello,
Below is a copy of a petition to ask for a public inquiry into the events surrounding Ipperwash two years ago. If you would like to print this out and collect signatures in your community or pass this on, it would be appreciated.
The OPP officer that was convicted of killing Dudley George on September 6, 1995 was sentenced to only 180 hours of community work, is still drawing his salary and shows no remorse. Some of the officers made memorabilia of the event in the form of "Team Ipperwash" t-shirts and mugs. The officers that beat Dudley's brother with batons were never held responsible.
This incident came out of the government refusal to take the land claim of the Chippewa Stoney Point People seriously. The Stoney Point reserve was taken by the War Department in the 1940s to build the military base, Camp Ipperwash, and many people were moved to the Kettle Reserve. The remainder of the land was disposed of in a questionable real estate deal.
Some 100 Stoney Pointers now are living in the barracks of the abandoned Camp Ipperwash which was supposed to be returned to them after the army left. It has not happened, as in many other places in Canada.
Any petitions or letters that you can send to the Members of Parliament listed below or myself will be appreciated.
Sandra Mitchell
S.I.S.I.S. note: Due to the length of this petition text, it doesn't print well directly from this formatting. We recommend cutting and pasting it into a word processing program, then formatting and printing from there. It is important that you follow the three-column format of printed name, printed address and signature. Also, all pages must contain both the text of the petition and names, i.e. no full pages of signatures with no text.
To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
WHEREAS many questions concerning the events preceding, during and after the fatal shooting of Anthony Dudley George on September 6, 1995 at Ipperwash Provincial Park where over 200 armed officers were sent to control 25 unarmed men and women have not been answered,
WHEREAS the officers involved in the beating of Bernard George were not held responsible for their actions,
WHEREAS the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) refused to cooperate with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in recording the details of that night,
WHEREAS the influence and communications of Lambton MPP Marcel Beaubien with the government have been verified through transcripts presented in Legislature,
WHEREAS the trust of the portfolio of Native Affairs held by Attorney General Charles Harnick is compromised by his continued refusal for a full public inquiry into the events of Ipperwash,
WHEREAS the promised return of Camp Ipperwash to the Stoney Point Nation by the Federal Ministry of Defense and the serious negotiation of land claims by both the provincial and federal government could have avoided a conflict,
WE, the undersigned, petittion the Legislative Assembly of Ontario that a full public inquiry be held into the events surrounding the fatal shooting of Dudley George on September 6, 1995 to eliminate all misconceptions held by and about the government, the OPP and the Stoney Point People.
