Letter Writing Campaign for Stoney Pointers

STONEY POINTERS CALL FOR LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN

- posted to sovernet-L March 30/97, by Carolyn Zavitz

URGENT APPEAL: WRITE/CALL IMMEDIATELY!

CHARGE THE COPS WITH MURDER! INQUIRY INTO DUDLEY'S MURDER!
DUDLEY'S CAUSE: STONEY POINT! NO MORE GENOCIDE! NO MORE MURDER!
JUSTICE FOR DUDLEY GEORGE! NO JUSTICE NO PEACE!

The Aazhoodenaang Enjibaajig--the Stoney Point People--are asking for your support in an urgent letter writing/telephone campaign to let the government know that we want justice for Dudley George and the Stoney Point People.

The Stoney Point People have been murdered, shot, brutally beaten, criminalized in the media and the legal system, removed from their unceded terrritory, had their sacred ceremonial grounds desecrated... Not one charge has ever been laid for any of these crimes.

The Stoney Point defendants are now facing many of the most serious charges about to be dealt with in the courts on MAY 6-9 & 26-30, 1997. These relate to the September 6, 1995 OPP confrontation during which Dudley George was murdered and others were brutally assaulted.

One policeman, Kenneth Deane, has been charged with "criminal negligence" and his case before the courts starting April 1 is being used to refuse a full public inquiry into the murder of Anthony O'Brien "Dudley" George.

Therefore it is urgent that you write/phone the premier sending copies to leaders of the opposition, the solicitor-general and the attorney-general/minister of Native Affairs to:

1. Demand that the government learn about and honour the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and learn about and honour the 1825 & 1827 Treaties recognizing the Stoney Point People's indigenous rights to their unceded territory including their sacred ceremonial grounds.

2. Urge the government to commit to restoring the Stoney Point Community which should have happened at the end of World War II by calling for an end to any kind of police or government harassment of the Stoney Point People.

3. Demand that the criminal charges against the Stoney Point defendants be dropped immediately.

4. Demand a full public inquiry into the murder of Anthony O'Brien "Dudley" George and the other serious human rights violations that are occurring against the Stoney Point People.

This is where we live and this is what we must do for where there is NO JUSTICE! there can be NO PEACE!

RE: JUSTICE FOR DUDLEY GEORGE AND THE STONEY POINT PEOPLE

Even though the Stoney Point People are supposed to have their indigenous rights protected by the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and the 1825 & 1827 Treaties, they were removed from their territory in 1942 under the War Measures Act and have been denied proper respect for their sacred ceremonial grounds including those in what has come to be known as Ipperwash Provincial Park.

The Ontario Provincial Police have also desecrated sacred Aazhoodena Territory by using it for training without the consent of the Stoney Point People. Because there is no respect for the indigenous rights of the Stoney Point People, many have been assaulted, arrested, charged and in Dudley's case--murdered.

This must stop!

As a person concerned about peace and justice in Ontario, I:

1. demand that the government learn about and honour the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and learn about and honour the 1825 and 1827 Treaties recognizing the Stoney Point People's indigenous rights to their unceded territory including their sacred ceremonial grounds.

2. urge the government to commit to restoring the Stoney Point Community which should have happened at the end of World War II by calling for an end to all police and government harassment of the Stoney Point People.

3. demand that the criminal charges against the Stoney Point defendants be dropped immediately.

4. demand a full public inquiry into the murder of Anthony O'Brien "Dudley" George and the other serious human rights violations that are occurring against the Stoney Point People.

Sincerely,

[your name]
