STONEY POINT TRIAL UPDATE

Stoney Point First Nation #43 -- Aazhoodenaang Enjibaajig

For Immediate Release - Thursday, March 13, 1997

posted by Anti-Racist Action Toronto

On March 10 & 11, 1997 Sarnia Provincial court heard testimony on the trial of Glenn Morris George, 34, who is charged with two counts of assault, one of mischief and one of uttering a death threat in connection with two incidents on June 27 and 28, 1995 in Aazhoodena Territory where the military still maintained their presence in what they called camp Ipperwash.

Iron "tire slashers" were placed in the roadway leading to the sacred burial grounds and led to the conflict between Glenn George and the Armed Forces personnel even though they admitted knowing that children and families resided in the area. Capt. Allan Howse saw the roadblocks being removed by Glenn George and a shouting match followed with the army being ordered to "Get the fuck off our land!" Howse also testified that George who was driving a tractor bumped the army truck and caused $900 damage.

Then at 4:20 am on June 28, 1995 a further assault allegedly occurred when Commissionaire Donald Stevens testified that he was pushed by the accused.

Judge Alexander Graham set March 24, 1997 as the date when he issues his verdict or will set a date when he will.

THE AAZHOODENAANG ENJIBAAJIG INDIGENOUS RIGHTS TO LIFE, JUSTICE, AND SELF-DETERMINATION CAN NO LONGER BE IGNORED AND THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES IN 1997. It is within the context of the Stoney Point People asserting their indigenous rights to their territory that all of the criminal charges have been laid as part of an overall campaign of criminalization and genocide. These particular charges stem back to June 1995.

On July 29, 1995 the Stoney Pointers moved into the barracks and the military moved out. Many of the other charges yet to be heard relate to the September 6, 1995 confrontation when the police attacked the unarmed men women and children at Stoney Point resulting in the murder of Anthony O'Brien "Dudley " George. (Policeman Kenneth Deane's trial begins on April 1 for criminal negligence in Dudley's murder).

The first of the five Stoney Pointers who were standing in a row,
Told Capt. Howse, "Get the Fuck off Our Land!" and they did go!
Not at all about justice, these events in the courtroom show
But on March 24 this Stoney Pointer's verdict we will know.
